Handmade crochet is built one stitch at a time, by hand - which is exactly what gives it character, but also means it needs a little more care than something off a factory line. A few simple habits will keep your piece looking the way it did the day it arrived.
Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent - avoid the washing machine, since agitation can stretch stitches out of shape or cause the yarn to felt. Gently squeeze the piece to work the water through; never wring or twist it, which can permanently distort the stitches. Press out excess water by rolling the piece in a clean towel rather than squeezing it directly.
Lay the piece flat on a dry towel and gently reshape it to its original dimensions while it's still damp. Let it air dry away from direct sunlight and away from radiators or heaters, both of which can fade colour or warp fibres. Avoid hanging crochet pieces to dry - the weight of the wet yarn can stretch them out of shape.
Fold pieces flat rather than hanging them on hooks or hangers, which can stretch the stitches over time. Store in a breathable cotton bag or drawer rather than sealed plastic - plastic traps moisture and can lead to mildew. Keep pieces out of direct sunlight when storing for long periods, since prolonged light exposure fades yarn colour.
